Internships Guidelines

First and foremost, all the new kids(ppl use this word a lot here when referring to college students) coming in should learn to be self dependent. Meaning that dont expect seniors or others to spoonfeed and keep u informed. Every1 has their own issues to deal with at PSU, so find out the info and ask if u have doubts instead of askin blunt questions that u can easily find out.

Internships for grad students is a little tricky. Its a catch 22 situation.
Funded students (non-PhD):
If u have funding, then u may disappoint ur prof if u do internship and not ur research during summer. btw grad students comin in fall 2009 can only do internship in summer 2010 or later. So u need to judge if ur prof will encourage u for internship or not. U want to play the cards right here, the progf gave u funding and if u decide to not do his work in summer, it may look bad. Howevr there r some profs that encourage internships fpr their funded students. So it depends on ur prof.
TA funded studnets usually have more freedom deciding whether to do an internship or not.

Non-funded students:
If u r coming into PSU unfunded, u wanna make a 1st good impression on ur prof. See my post on FUNDING TIPS in this forum. So some profs dont have money for u in 1st year, but they r willing to let u work in summer after u talk to them early. So if u look for internships in summer, then u r kinda losing ur chances for funding.

So u have a choice, earn some money in summer for internship or hopefully get funding for the next entire year. i.e $24000 tuition waiver plus $1000 a month full time RA!....funding seems better than internship, nah?
So wats good bout internship and why do u ppl talk bout it?

Typically internship is an undergrad thing. First and foremost, internship here is NOT like india. The procedure for internship is same as applyin and gettin ready for as a part time job. So u gotta take it seriously.
Advantages of grad students gettin internships
1. Get a feel for the job.
2. Make good contacts
3. Hopefuflly internship lands u full-time eventually wit the company

If companies have internships they will hire grad students, but they prefer undergrads. Also if in summer 2010, they see u graduating in Spring 2011, they might tell u to apply full time directly.
Thing is, even for internship they have to get u security clearance since u r not US citizen, so some companies dont wanna do that since internship is just temporary for a few months. They dont wanna invest in a foreign student coz theres no gaurantee he'll come back to work for them. But for full-time, they r more interested !

For those who have no job experience, u can CONSIDER internships. Talk to Kim Fox in 208 Hammond bldg. Take an appointment with her and ask ALL ur questions. She is a very helpful lady and she really did a lot to get my resume in the right format.

For those with job experience, u wont benefit that much frm internship coz u will still have job experience on ur resume.

My own experience is that I never got an internship however hard i tried, but I still got a full-time job in my 3rd sem of grad school. That is rare, but not impossible. U need to make contacts, go to networking events, career fairs etc etc..
DONT WAIT FOR UR FRIENDS TO TELL U BOUT CAREER FAIRS AND DONT WAIT FOR THEM, U SHUD APPLY ON UR OWN AND PLZZZZZZZ DONT EXPECT SPOONFEEDING! .

Some good (I mean real good) univs in big cities have tie-ups with companies who tend to select local talent. I know Wichita State has CISCo which usually gives internships to WSU students.

GOLDEN RULE: If a company likes ur profile, they will spare no expense to get you there. They will pay for relocation and everything!

So bottom line dont go for a 3rd class univ just coz its in a big city. All the best univs in the US arent in big cities, but companies pay for u to come visit them.

My example: I was called fr an interview wirth Cessna. One day I just got a call frm them saying that they wud like to interview me in Kansas. So they paid for my full flight, hotel, car etc JUST for the interview. And Kansas was 5 hrs flight from Penn State. They paid amst $800 to get me there.

Part Time jobs Do's and Dont's Part 2.

Q: Look, my parents and I are spending a lot of money on my college here. So before I even accept an admission, I need to know my chances of getting a job after graduation. How do I ensure this?
A: This is a good time to be in academia. The US economy might recover by the time u finish ur studies. So try not to finish in 3 sems. If u r doing thesis MS, take it thru the 4 sems. If u get admission into a well known univ, ur chances of a job are higher, BUT NOT GUARANTEED. But my belief is that no one can predict the US job market. It takes some effort to apply online for jobs. A lot of my friends from India all have jobs now after MS. Some are doing PhD and applying for jobs at same time.

Q: Is the thesis option for MS better for job?
A: Not only for job but its overall better.

Q: If i had work experience in India, does that help?
A: For prof funding it doesnt, but for full-time job it does. U just have to phrase ur self well when u describe the job so that u show u r a responsible job seeker.

Q: Wait, how do I phrase myself? whats that even supposed to mean?
A: let see an example: Suppose Ford seems interested in u coz of ur academics u put on ur resume at career fair or online. Now when they look at the experience section of ur resume, if they see:

Mahindra Automative Engineer: project was to improve the fuel effeciency of a new hybrid vehicle. Worked with Mr. Y. Project involved team of 10 ppl. and blah..blah abut the project

But what Ford wants to know is what YOU did on the project. So re-word ur resume and ur speech by saying what u did. You could say "I analzyed the field data for fuel consumption, I initiated 3 reports, I performed thermal analysis."
Its all about "I", "myself" and ",me". You have to blow ur own horn. Thats what these goras do. Get used to it.

Q: You talk about me doing the effort to go to career fairs, meetings, resume workshops, etc etc,. Did you forget that I have 3 classes and they all have assignments, projects and exams?
A: Nope, I did not forget. When u arrive here, one of the things u have to learn and pick up is time management. At first it may seem overewhelming, but trust me, with the right attitude, u will be fine in no time.

Q: What do you mean "right attitude"?
A: There are 2 kinds of ppl who come to the US> One kind is the person who wants to live the same way he did in India. The other kind is the person who wants to adapt to the US work styles.
What i mean is, dont try to make USA like India. thats never gonna work and u will get frustrated. Instead pick up the work habits of the americans. Dont pick up their culture, just their work ethics. If you get used to it, u will be able to become proficient in doing ur studies, applying for jobs and funding at the same time and still have some time for pav bhajii, chole, chai etc etc with friends.

Can you elaborate on working style of Americans?
A: In the workforce they work hard 9 to 5, then totally not do anything work-related on weeknds.
In college, they tend to want to underastand something, not mug it up. Generally they will try to get as much as they can get while studying. They will mostly say "can u show me how to solve it?" rather than "can u show me the answer".
Mostly they pay attention to the little details. Sometimes thye also like to leave stuff for the last minute like u and I do . But copying and plagirising is a no-no for them.
My intl' student advisor at penn state told me that in general, Americans dont like being taken for a ride or being made a fool of. They prefer if u admit ur mistake no matter how much scrwed up it may be. Trust me, those guys make more dumb mistakes than we would. They also love to party hard on weekends unless an exam is next week.
Keep in mind that they dont like (i found this firsthand) to discuss their grades or how many marks they got in ur exam. They follow the 'personal space' funda. Grades n stuff r generally personal. But there are ppl who r willing to share their personal info if u r good friends.
The location of the univ makes a difference. A college like NJIT isnt in the best parts of town, so u may find more aloof students. Whereas in central Pennsylvanai or Virginia or Maryland, I wud say its a much better crowd.
Q: Is it true that Spring students CANNOT apply for summer 2010 interships?
A: Unfortunately, that is true. Spring students can only apply for internships or co-ops in Dec 2010 or later. Fall 2009 students can apply for summer.
Reason is, the rules say:
1. U can apply for intership as an F1 only if u have
(a) One year of lawful presence in the US
OR
(b) 18 credits earned in college ( I'[m not sure if its 18, but its def not 9 or 10 credits).

Why Fall students can get internships?
(a) Since they have completed 2 sems (fall 09 and spring 10), they will have 9 credits per sem at least, so they will have the 18 credits required.

Spring students will take 3 courses in spring 2010 sem so they will have approx 9 or 10 credits, so that will not make them eligible for internships in summer.

Q What if I am not getting funded right now ( during the admit) and expecting to get funded in the second sem I happily take the admit. And what shld one do if we are not funded in the second sem to??/ Will the part time jobs salary be good enough to pay for the second sem. Or else do we need to again take the money from our parents which would be like little embarrassing (I hope evry one knws what I mean).
Answer: Well, we gotta make sure what we mean by "expecting to get" . Its hard to generalize this answer. But part time jobs can pay for living expenses, not for tuition fee. Like I said before, you can only work 20 hrs a week while school is in session. I would suggest taking a loan for your education anyway. If u get funding well and good.

Q How is the education system over there.??? Is it something like the south indian educational system where students literally mug up and get marks. Or is it with full fundas?
Answer: I think I answered this question already when I talked about working style of americans. But in short, no mugging,.... if u dont understand the material, then u r screwed in the exams :D . But the system is such that u have to study everyday to keep up. U cant expect to laze around (like we did in india) and then mug up for finals. The finals may be worth only 20% of ur grade, but the homeworks and project account for 50% or more of your grade. So u gotta pay attention to those hws coz the exams are very similar to hws. And remember that in grad classes, YOUR instructor sets the paper, NOT the univ. So basically if he didnt teach u siomething or talk about it, he cant put that on his exam. And since u have him for classes, u will know the style of his/her exams.

Q Supposing that we get funded for some research project, what's the worse case that we get kicked out from there. ??? ( I have gud projects under my belt, but the technology they use, it keeps me wondering abt am I good enough???
A: In short, once u r funded unless u really screw things up, u will still have ur funding for the next 2 yrs. Dont worry, they give u enuf time to prove urself. They first give u easy stuff to do and it might frustrate u, but they are testing tio see how much of a worker u are. So as long as u know ur theory , the technology u will learn for SURE!

Part Time jobs/Employment on Campus Do's and Dont's Part 1

Q1: If I work on campus, how many hours can I work?
A: You can work ONLY on campus for maximum 20 hrs per week. The 20 hr per week rule applies to american students also. But americans can work off campus whereas F1 students cant.

Q2: What about summer when school is not in session?
A: In summer u can work max 40 hrs a week but not more than 8 hrs a day.

Q3: How do I find jobs on campus? All that are posted are taken.
A: Some jobs are not necessarily posted. U have to ask around and interact with ppl (not only indians) to get info on available jobs.
Here's how I found my 1st part-time as an undergrad. I was eatin in d cafeteria when I spilled my drink. I went to clean it up when this girl walks over and says, "Dont worry, I get paid to clean that". And I saw she was a student (its not hard to spot a 18 yr old). So I asked her how she applied and whom she spoke to about the job.
So thats how I landed that job. So if u go to the univ copy room or see that some student is working, go up to him/her and ask about how he/she applied 4 dis job. U may never know what happens.

Q3: Whats wrong in working off campus? How will the US govt know it if I dont report my wages?
A: No reputable company will hire u on an F1 visa. They themselves will get into touble. If they pay u with money deposited to ur bank acct, there is a record of it. Ur name is already in the US legal database. So dont try it, its not worth.

Q: But my senior is working in a gas station and he makes money and he seems ok, why cant I do it?
A: There is a saying that the 1st 100 are lucky, but the 101st gets screwed. So basically dont let urself get into this. The way ur senior is avoiding the govt is if the gas station is owned by a desi and he is paying him under the table. Or he may be paying him corrctly, but the senior is not reporting those wages in his taxes.
Truth is, if u plan to worlk in USA and they do a background check, u cud mess things up.

Q: Can i survive expenses like rent and food with part time jobs?
A: Answer is a broad but not definitive YES. U can but u always need some backup money too. But by and by, part time jobs shud cover normal living expenses. But if u want to go on a crazy spring break trip to Cancun etc, then def it wont! :)

Q:What is the minimum wage they pay me?
A; At least in PA and the east cost, i think the min is $6.70 an hr, or most jobs pay $7 or so.

Q: Can I start looking for jobs now if I'm applying for spring 2010?
A: No, u cant apply, but when u finally select ur univ, then u can look at the univ website or talk to other studenst in that univ.

Q: So u r saying that if I make $7 an hr for 20 hrs a week, i will be making $560 a month?
A: Well, heres how it works. U will be paid either weekly or bi-weekly, but a certain SMALL portion will be taken out of ur paycheck for taxes. Now being on F1 visa, the govt cant tax u, so every april when u file ur taxes, the entire amt that was removed from ur paychecks for the past yr is refunded to u by the govt.

Q: So how much goes exactly for taxes? I need to know so I can plan my monthly expenses?
A: I cant answer that now coz each univ and each state in US works diff.

Q: I heard that girls dont really work part time jobs as its not safe. Is this true?
A: Not at all, girls work the same as guys. Of course jobs like univ police at night are not recommended for girls. 90% of jobs are done by both.

Q: Do i need a resume for part time jobs?
A: 99% No. Unless the job requires specific skills like a Lab Rover or a computrer consultant jobs.

Q: Mom said dont waste too much time on part-time jobs. Concentrate on studies. What the general trend in US regarding this?
A: Ur main purpose here is ur degree attainment. So do part time jobs just to keep u going while AT THE SAME time, talk to profs etc bout funding. See my funding tips thread in this community.

Q: But all the part time jobs are taken by the Fall 2009 guys. How will that help me?
A: U r thinking of only the indians and the jobs that only indians do. Make sure u choose a big univ and look in 'other' places on campus for jobs. U will be surprised how many ppl leave d jobs and vacancies open. Plus u have a good advantage to apply for summer jobs. Also keep in mind that many ppl graduate in end of Fall (point mentioned by Ashutosh).

Q: I hear ppl talking about OPT and CPT! What in the world is that?
A: I can give u a whole lecture on it...........but I wont coz its not worth it at this point. During ur spring orientation ur int'l office will describe it in detail and then u will know better. Trust me, no need to worry bout it for now.

Q: So if u say that the off campus jobs r illegal for F1 students, why do so many Indians do it?
A: The new trend is: Get to USA, show u have a "US degree" on ur profile and walk back to india standing tall.
Also, with so many small univs poppin up in d country giving I-20's like peanuts to students with poor acads, u have not-d-best lot of students in the US.
What is does is give the genuine studenst a bad name in the minds of the americans. So if u want to join that bandwagon no one is stopping you.

Q: So summer work is 40 hrs a week, but still only on-campus, right?
A: Correct.

Q: Whats the job scene in US right now?
A: Honestly it doesnt look too gud right now, but after 2 yrs or so, I am sure it will be better.

Q: So after finishing my MS, will I get placed by my college?
A: In USA, u dont get "placed". U have 2 do the effort to go to career fairs, info sessions, resume workshops, networing events, apply online and follow up. In a nutshell, if u have a 4.00 GPA and u sit doing nothing assuming a company will come to ur univ and pick all the 4.00 students, u will get nowhere. A guy who has 3.2 GPA, if he approaches the company and keeps in touch, they will consider him a better worker.

Q; Does the name of the univ matter for jobs?
A: It does to the extent that more well known the univ, more companies willl come to the career fair.

Q: What if i still have some more lingering questions at this point?
A: u can email me or ask me directly here. But thats just 1 option, U can get lotsa info once u have the acceptance from a univ.

Q: Does having internship mean I am gonna get full-time?
A: Not necessary at all.

Q: My friend got internship but I didnt and we are both in the same dept?
A: U need to evaluate how u presented ur credentials. I have seen ppl with the same academic qualification, but one guy is lazy to elaborate stuff and make a good presentation, so he may be lacking behind.
If u have no internships, but u had work exp in india, then u can still put that on ur resume and u still have as equal a chance as any1 else to get a full-time job.

Q: Do i need to dress up for career fairs or will a smart button shirt n' pant be enough?
A: YES!!! Suit and tie for guys, skirt/pants with formal jackets for girls.

Q: If i work in food services and I am pure veg and dont want to touch meat, will they not hire me?
A: No. You wont belive how much ppl respect other's opinions here in US. So if u r not comfy with handling meat, let them know and it will have no effect on their decision to hire you.

Q: I want to go to the Math dept for the tutor/proctor job, but my friends are'nt coming along or they're delayed.
A: Dont do job hunts as a group. Think about it: If 5 or 6 desi(or any) ppl walk into a supervsiors office asking for job applications or possible on-the-spot employmemt, it is a bit intimidating and shows a bit of rudeness to the supervisor

Q: I was told by a senior not to go to the spring 2010 career fair as I am too early to graduate and they wont even bother looking at my resume. Is this true?
A: While its true that u r too early to be on the job market since u just started ur school, u gain a lot by going to career fairs. USA is very very different from India in the job market and process. So by going to fairs, u get an idea of what to expect, what others are doing, how to talk to companies, etc. This is like ur dress rehearsel. So if u make some mistakes, its ok and u can improve next time. So that when the 'real' career fair comes when u r about to graduate, u r confident and know exactly what to do and say. So go to as many career fairs as u can and plz dont wait for ur friends

Q: Wait, u saying I shud have no friends and be a lone ranger here?
A: Thats not what I meant. Be a lone ranger for things like job hunting, and funding. Otherwise its best to be surrounded by ur peers and enjoy the fun the univ has to offer and also u can hang out with ur indian peers so u dont get homesick.

Thesis Vs Non-Thesis What to choose and Why

Lets start this topic by giving you a real example I encountered.

Q: If we are an aerospace company making aircraft, do we hire only aerospace engr students?
A: Well, we make aircraft, so we need ppl in IE, EE, ME and Aero. Also we need ChemE ppl for the manufacturing and analysis process. An IE person may not know what an empennage is, while an aero guy wud know. But the IE one can learn and if his operations skills r good, we can use some1 like him.

Q: So why do u say "BS required for job"? But u also hire MS students, does doing MS give u an edge over a BS student?
A: A talented MS student has the edge. But if we have a guy doing MS, we want him to be specialized in something, like his research project or thesis must be something specialized that sets him apart from BS student. Otherwise if he just has an MS but no specific skill, then we may hire the BS guys if they have more skills like a senior design project in final yr related to aero.

Q: Now that u mentioned thesis, ppl say thesis is true only for PhD ppl , not for those looking for jobs Whats ur take on this?
A: Well, doing the thesis is ur stepping stone to PhD. Also if u want a job and later decide to do Phd, it helps a lot. Now frm a job point of view, it defintely helps. The US govt has imposes strict laws bout hiring foreign students when many americans r getting laid off. SO we really need to show the govt why we hire a foreign person. And a good way to show that is if we say that the MS stduent has a specialized skill and has good research skills. Here is where a thesis comes in.
When I see some1 with thesis, i dont actually care about teh details of d thesis, just the fact that he does thesis tells me that:
1. he has good time management skills
2. he is a hard worker and knows how to prepare slides and status reports.

3. He can carry on multiple work assignments.

Q: But I guess the thesis shud be specific to the industry , right?
A: yes, some companies like Comp Science and IT dont require thesis coz they r non-specialized industries, so u may get the job.
But if it comes down to candidate A and B, the one with the thesis will get the higher paid job. But overall. IT fields are fairly common and even a BS student will do as MS person doesnt have that much specialization for common fields like IT and Comp Sci.

Q; Every1 seems to be comin in for Comp Sci. How do u distinguish which comp Sci degree holder to hire?
A: Comp Sci MS is not specialized like EE, AERO, AE, BIO, CE etc. So many smaller hire these students. I dont see why so many ppl who did EE in undergrad are switchin to Computers when its a saturated field. And in these times, the more skilled u r, the better ur chances of gettin a job in the US and the company has better reason to hire u instead of an american.

From students side :
Q: "i dont agree that taking non thesis will close your gates to PhD, but certainly it will make it tough to qualify for same"
A: This is more a response. All good phd programs need u to hve thesis. PhD ppl always get funding, so u may get a phd, but with no funding if u have no thesis. From my 7 yr experience, MS thesis is way better and makes u more attractive to companies in times like these coz they can justify to the govt why they want to hire a foreign kid when so many jobless americans r there. They can see u have a specialized skill (i.e th topic of ur thesis) and will hire that person instead of some1 who just has a MS with general courses. -- of course , this is of it coems down to the wire between candidate A and B.
If u have PhD thoughts, its a win-win situtaion for u to do thesis. A lotta ppl will discourage u and tell u its tough. but dont listen. It will be very hard (5% chance) of phd admit with funding if u dont have an MS with thesis.

With the thesis option, you are required to complete a dissertation at the end of your Masters' program and defend it orally ! On the other hand, with the non-thesis option you are required to complete a project at the end of your course !

What I wanna know is what EFFECTS do these options have on our career in general !

Q:Is it that if we opt for the non-thesis option, we are not eligible for Ph.D and we have to compulsorily get into workforce ? Is thesis an absolute requirement for applying to Ph.D programs after we complete our Masters' ?

:Yes, good that u got all d facts. If u do MS w/o thesis, you are closing your academic career at MS.
With thesis, u have an option of doing PhD later.

It varies from major to major, but in engineering, thesis is more looked upon by companies bcoz it tells the employer u r responsible to academic commitment and basically u can be trusted with work and produce proposals, reports n presentations ina timely manner.
Lets put it this way to be be fair. If many MS students apply for the same job with same credentials, the thesis guy is given preference if all other factors r contsant.

Why students dont do thesis ??
People dont do thesis for a variety of reasons. Some are financial, prof doesnt recommend it or they are just plain lazy coz they see their friends do it.
They dont want to do PhD.
Industry is their final destination.

Funding Tips QnA

Q: Many of us heard that many univs give funding only for phd students?? is it true??
A: In most cases, it is true. Why? Because PhD candidates r bigger investments for the prof since its a long commitment. However, if u go to a bigger univ, u can get funding for MS coz there are more profs who just want students.
Keep in mind, no prof can force u to do PhD. u HAVE TO finish ur MS first. This means that u can tell ur prof u r thinking of Phd but wud like to do ur research in MS first and then most likely do PhD. Tellin this makes them feel u r at least considering phd, so they might give u funding.

Q:My doubt is that when should we start writing to them for funding?Once we have got admits or during may or june? when would be the best time?
A: you MUST only write to them when you HAVE an admit. Not before.
And like I said b4, u must not just email askin for funding directly. Plz be prepared that if ur I-20 arrived w/o funding on it, u will 98% not have funding for the 1st sem. Thats when u can try for 2nd sem or the subsequent summer .

Q:Normally profs prefer students to pursue PhD, in order to assign him as RA/TA. Typical students intent would be to pursue only MS with RA/TA. How can we tackle the profs? How shud we convince them?
A: Well, a good prof shud expect u to finish MS first and then PhD. U can tell him u r thinking of PhD, but u first want to get ur MS doing the research work under him. Remember profs are not lookin for ppl who want funding. They r lookin for ppl who want research and show inteterest -- thats the whole point of RA.
As for TA, it is dependent on the dept. The bigger ur univ and dept, the higher ur chances of getting TA. TAs are given mostly to current students. So if u want to apply for TA, shoot for the spring sem after u get the fAll 2010 experience under ur belt.

Q: Well i am a neophyte in the research scheme of things with no paper presentations .Do you think that I can still go on huntin for RA?I can write good mails to prof seekin for RA,but what if he finds that I am a dumb-headed guy once I land there?can u guide me as how to enhance my chances of getting funded?
A: It should be obvious that u have to be intelligent in grasping subject matter. Some profs, even if they see u have no experience wit research, if ur goals fit their interests, then they might be willing to give u a chance. And like I said b4, initially they give u very mundane tasks. This helps weed out those kids who just want fundinfg and who really like the work.
But common sense is, a commerce guy cant do aerospace enginerring that easily :)... so if u dont know something, gop for somethin u know.... dont go for somethin that is glamorous or just coz others r doing it.

Q: Does mailing to professors, regarding our profile, resume etc help in getting an admit??or does it wholly depend on d materials we send(like transcripts, gre, toefl, sop,lor etc), as it is finally d prof of d concernd dept, that r gng 2 recommend for an admission, isnt it???
A: U hit the nail on the head. Mailing profs doesnt help ur admit at all. Because in ur SOP, essays and application the dept sees it and the prof will see it too. And AFTER u get admission, if the prof likes ur profile he will contact u to send him ur resume. This happens only in well known univs, so make sure u r not applyin to low rated schools.
Admission is done by admissions office first and then by the dept. So ur best bet is to include as MUCH bout urself in ur application. AFTER u get the admit u can email the profs askin about research work.
Coz if u do b4 admit, the prof will immediately ask if u got admit first .

Q: Its better to approach non desi profs ???
A: Not really. What I meant was not to approach ONLY desi profs and dont expect desi profs to give u better treatment. Contact whichever prof u need to in ur areas of interest, u can contact 2 or 3 .. doesnt matter.
Non-desi profs 'tend' to be more respectful , but NOT ALWAYS.

Q. I am accepted by the dept, and the college is going to send my i20 in 4 weeks after processing the financial docs, so I don think I have time to convince him that I can do good research n get funding. As u said, once i20 is got, 1st sem is gone without funding.
A: Yes, that is correct. U shud aim for funding for spring and/or summer.

Q: can you pls tell me what to put in the objective part in my resume?
whether to put "To pursue master’s degree that suits my interests and qualifications and gain knowledge by learning depth in the subject I have taken up" or "To work as a research assistant"
A: I would combine those 2 statements and get rid of the fluffy stuff. I would say " To obtain a research or teaching assistantship position to supplement my pursuit of a Masters degree in XXXX with a specialization in XXXX.

Note that the above statemnet works if u r applyin to a school that has good research reputation.
EX: u r a EE major and u see courses that sound fancy, but if ur basic EE backgrnd is strong, those courses r meant to TEACH u the stuff. Remember they stress on learnin the material, not just gettin good grades.

Funding Tips TA/RA Part2

ABOUT TA POSITIONS

TA is handled by the prof, but mostly by the dept who assigns TAs based on their need. For TA, u need to contact the dept secretary who will guide u as to which prof coordinates the TA hiring. Then u have to email that prof in the same vein as u wud asking for research, but obviously ur resume has to be tailored towards a TA position and u can talk bout how u can impart the subject to the students and in the process u can improve ur own knowledge. In this case, u will need to clear up front that u r interested in TA funding. U can say it in the followin example:

" I also strongly hope that I will be given consideration for financial aid through teaching and research assistantships at ur dept"

I need to make 1 more point here. Try not to make ur emails and correspondances to profs sound artificial or as if they were copied from somewhere else. These profs r experienced enuf to tell the diff.

Also, do all these things on ur own. If u have any questions ask me or any1 else who has been thru this. I repeat, dont do funding things as a group, meaning dont wait for ur friend to get his stuff done. You do urs. Try not to go with the flow.

This is not personal to any1! What Ive noticed among indian students is that we tend to stick in a group for too many things. And in this group, no 1 is allowed to rise above d rest. So all are at the same level. U need to get out of this grp from an academic standpoint only. Step up and do the stuff u need to do to get funding, dont wait for others. U will succeed if u make the effort. PPl say IE funding is hard, but i know 3 kids who did get funding, so its not impossible.

Also, beware of false advice, u dont even have to agree with me if ur grad advisor or dept tells u otherwise. For example, ur friend might say dont take this course coz its hard. But if the prof u r interested in is teachin the course, here is ur chance to impress him. Another example is some1 tells u not to go for career fair coz its a waste of time and u r too early to graduate. I say u need to go to as many career fairs so that when the real time comes, u r ready and know exactly what to expect.

For girls (guys too, but mostly girls): Keep in mind that no guy will want to look like a fool in front of an indian girl. So he may give u advice to justify his own wrong actions. If he didnt go to the career fair or didnt get anythin out of it, he will tell u that its usless and that u shudnt go either coz he doesnt wanna look silly in ur eyes.......so dont be discouraged.

FUNDING TIPS TA/RA Part 1

I've been thinking on putting this down for quite some time. These are just my own tips or me just ranting, but here goes:

For those who have funding, congratulations. For those who dont at this time, read on:

1. Now that you have admission, go to ur dept's website. See the faculty list and make a note of each professors specialization. After u do that, do some googling to see how many papers and stuff each prof has published. Then try to match ur interests with theirs and identify 2 or 3 professors you want to contact.

Side Note: Those with a "professor" title generally have more funding, but sometimes are not as enthused to hire brand new grad students. Assistant and associate professors have less money, but they want to become professors so they want to get the talent and get new grad students. This is just an observation and not a hard-and-fast rule.

2. Ok, so now u narrowed it down to 4 profs. But before u make the 1st contact, email the graduate secretary of ur dept. U can find the name and email of the secretary on ur dept website. These ppl can be very helpful. Also u wanna make good contacts. So when u email d grad secretary, introduce urself to her in a polite and professional email. Make sure u mention that u've received acceptance in the dept and wud like to email Prof XXX. Ask her when is prof XXX available and if he is in town. DONT use this same email to ask any other academic course questions like credits, internships, blah blah.
The reason to do this is to establish the communication so that when u come here, they can associate a name with a face. Also if u dont hear from a prof after u emailed them, the grad secretary can help u out, maybe ur emails were going to his junk mail.

3. So after u establish contact with the secreatary and know when can u email profs, u need to make a set of ur skills. Now heres the tricky part.

IF u were Prof. K, and u worked so hard to get research money from NASA and finally NASA gave u funds on the assumption that u will produce results for them in a timely manner. Prof K now needs to get new grad students to do this work, so what kinda students would you hire? How would u tackle when some1 whom u dont know much about contacts u from India asking for funding? U probably will say, "I need to know something bout this guy/gal. What are his skills....he may be gud in academics, but can he do research and is he a good presenter? Can he work in a lab? Is he a nice guy/gal to work with? If i use my money on him, can he do the job so that NASA is happy and gets me and my grad students more funding? Why should I take him when I can find some1 here whom I can see? If I read Jyoti's email asking to work with me, does she look like a serious, hardworking, and committed student with good interpersonal skills?

So this is generally what profs think. So YOUR JOB is to convince them that YOU are the best for it. The next few steps will talk bout what u need to do:

(a) List of skills: Make a bulleted list of skills and type it up neatly. Skills shud include Technical/Analytical, Computer, Work Experience(if any), Lab, communication, leadership, team building, awards and achievements. Growing up in India, I know my mother and probably urs too told u never to show off, but u got to do that here. Dont say "Oh, I dont have communication skills that I can list". But look back at ur college years---Did u present ur end-sem project, did u have group meetings (even with chai :D), did u use powerpoint to do presentations, did u communicate with diff people, did u coordinate things with the lab tech? All these things need to be part of ur skill set.
If u mentored (not ragged) ur juniors, this is considered v good in the US, so put that down. This skill set is useful during the SECOND OR THIRD EMAIL that u exchange wit the prof u r interested in.

b) U have to have, I repeat U have to have a resume!! This should be an academic resume tailored towards you getting funding. This resume is slightly , I said slightly different from the 1 u will use to apply for jobs/internships here.
The resume needs to state ur objective. For example: 'To obtain a research or teaching assistantship in the dept of aerospace engr in the field of structural dynamics'.

The thing is, resume is a formality here. Use the skill sets in part (a) to fill up ur resume also. Profs like resumes coz its easy to reference. But u wanna make sure that the resume describes u. So if u r in mumbai idling ur time away eating pav bhaji or bhel puri on the streets(that what I wud do in goa) , use some time to have some1 critique ur resume. Resume can be 1 or 2 pages or even 3. Try not 2 go more than 3.

So what goes in resume:
1. Name and email and address
2. Objective: 1 line or 2 line max
3. Education: List only where u did college, not XIIth. If ur % marks are good, add it in here, if u feel ur % doesnt show ur skills, dont put it in. If u have any academic honors, put it here.
4. Technical Experience: Now heres where u put ALL ur academic projects pertaining to the prof u r seeking funding from. If the prof has worked on actuator technology, and u've done a project in the same, put it here. U need to put what YOU did in the project rather than describin the project. For example:
ARL Structural Health Monitoring and Assessment Project

Penn State University, University Park, PA 16802 8/2005 – present
• Conducted experiments to analyze embedded functions by introducing structural
• Engineered experimental setup and data acquisition.
• Analyzed development of embedded functions sensitivity methods.
• In process of compiling report for presentation at AIAA Student Conference 2006.

As u can see in d example from my resume, I'm not giving too much details bout the project, but rather what I did. The details of d project will b talked bout later!

So aftr u've done technical experience, the next section is Work experience if u have any. Again work is very diff from academia. So u wanna make sure that the skills u learned at work r gonna help u in grad school.
For example, One of my friends workd 2 yrs and bcame Asst, manager for her division in mahendra, so she told the profs that she has the ability to do multi-tasks and stick to her deadline and thus she wud be good at doing research under him.

(5) The last section of ur resume can include any other academic honors that u didnt mention in the education section. This is also a good place to put ur computer, software and other skills in 1 or 2 lines per skill. Dont do too much detail, the SKILLS document that we talked bout b4 will take care of that.

(6) References: Available upon request.
Make sure u have at least 3 references, their full name, title, and contact info. No profs will contact ur recommendors but u may never know if they have a connection and that might help u.

Ok so we got
(a) Skills document --- 2 or 3 pages
(b) Resume

(c)
The last thing we need is a TECHNICAL SUMMARY of all our pertinent Projects.
Note that this section needs to be tailored to each prof that u r contacting. In this section u can do 2 things
1. Make a ppt of about 3-4 slides summarzing ur project. If u have figures and tables and results, put it here. Make sure the slides are to the point. If it was a paper that was published, say so.
2. Write a paragraph or 2 on each project. If it was presented, say it was!! It doesnt matter if it was presented to even 2 ppl, it still was presented.

At this time, any projects that u've done, take a print-out of the abstarct or the full project paper if its small enough (less than 20 pages). Like I said b4, think of all the projects u did from ur 4 yrs in college.

Awrite, now we got Skills set, resume and technical summary of projects. I think we are ready to move on. Now in USA, even if u d smartest kid in ur class in india, over here no 1 will give u anything unless u make an attempt. That being said, the guy who tries his best gets it. Everythin here is based on merit and showing that u r a good guy/gal to work with.

NOW you can email the profs. The magic formula (ok, its not magic) is to structure ur email as:
-- your name and ur qualifications
--- u show that u've read bout ur professor's research and what papers he has written
-- u show how ur skills match up those of his research.

The First email!!
The FIRST EMAIL THOUGH SHOULD BE SHORT!!!!!!
Just introduce urself, and talk bout ur research interests and ask if he/she wud like to see ur resume and skills.....See the example below.

First email example:
